A simple T4 maintenance reference based around regular checks and Haynes’ T4 schedule. Exact requirements vary by engine, model year and use, so this is a planning guide rather than a replacement for the correct manual for your van.

THE PRINCIPLE

Use a Schedule, Not Memory

Haynes describes its T4 intervals as minimum recommendations for vehicles in normal daily use and notes that dusty conditions, towing, frequent slow running and repeated short journeys may justify more frequent maintenance.

Engine-specific details matterThe T4 range spans different petrol and diesel engines, gearboxes and model years. Always confirm fluids, capacities, torque settings and belt requirements for the exact vehicle.
FREQUENT CHECKS

Approximately Every 250 Miles

Haynes’ regular-check schedule includes the following basic items:

  • Engine oil level.
  • Coolant level.
  • Screenwash level.
  • Brake/clutch fluid level.
  • Power-steering fluid level where applicable.
  • Tyres and tyre pressures.
  • Battery condition/security.

You do not need to turn ownership into a pre-flight inspection every morning, but these are quick checks worth making routinely and before long trips.

OIL SERVICE

Engine Oil & Filter

Haynes lists oil-service intervals that vary with engine and model. Its general schedule includes oil and filter renewal at 10,000 miles or six months, while certain pre-1999 1.9 ABL and 2.4 AJA applications are listed at 5,000 miles or six months.

  • Use the correct oil specification for your engine.
  • Change the filter with the oil.
  • Check for leaks afterwards.
  • Record date and mileage so the next service is not based on archaeological evidence from a glovebox receipt.
Do not apply one interval blindlyConfirm the correct schedule for your engine and service regime before relying on any mileage figure.
SERVICE ITEMS

At Oil-Service Intervals

Haynes combines the oil service with several useful inspections:

  • Drain water from the fuel filter where applicable.
  • Check front and rear brake pad/shoe thickness.
  • Check wiper-blade condition.
  • Reset the service indicator on later models where appropriate.
ANNUAL INSPECTION

Once a Year

Haynes’ annual inspection is a broader condition check in addition to the relevant oil-service items.

  • Exhaust system and mountings.
  • Under-bonnet components and hoses for leaks.
  • Handbrake operation.
  • Steering and suspension components.
  • Driveshaft gaiters.
  • Headlamp beam adjustment.
  • Pollen filter where fitted.
  • Hinges and locks.
  • Coolant antifreeze concentration.
  • Washers and wipers.
  • Road test and general running condition.
TIME-BASED ITEMS

Every Two Years

Haynes recommends several time-based jobs regardless of mileage:

  • Renew the air-filter element.
  • Check engine-management/emissions systems as applicable.
  • Renew brake fluid.
  • Renew coolant if there is doubt about antifreeze quality, in line with the Haynes recommendation.

Coolant technology and maintenance history can vary, so confirm what is actually in the system before mixing products.

20,000-MILE INSPECTION

Belts, Suspension & Underbody

At 20,000 miles, Haynes adds several important inspection items:

  • Timing-belt condition and tension.
  • Injection-pump drivebelt on applicable five-cylinder engines.
  • Auxiliary drivebelt condition.
  • Steering and suspension condition/security.
  • Manual-transmission oil level.
  • Underbody sealant for damage.
40,000 MILES

Fuel Filter & Transmission Checks

  • Renew the fuel filter.
  • Check automatic-transmission fluid level where applicable.
  • Check automatic final-drive oil level where applicable.
80,000 MILES

Timing Belt

Haynes lists timing-belt and tensioner renewal at 80,000 miles in its T4 schedule and also lists injection-pump drivebelt renewal on applicable five-cylinder engines.

Confirm the correct requirement for your engineAge, prior maintenance, engine code and previous belt work all matter. If the history is unknown, speak to a competent VW/T4 specialist rather than simply waiting for a mileage number.
ALL YEAR ROUND

Tyres, Brakes & Roadworthiness

  • Check tyre pressure and damage regularly.
  • Investigate uneven wear rather than repeatedly replacing tyres.
  • Do not wait for the MOT to tell you brake pads are low.
  • Listen for new suspension or wheel-bearing noise.
  • Pay attention to changes in steering feel, braking or vibration.
CAMPER EXTRAS

Additional Camper Maintenance

A converted T4 has systems that the original Volkswagen service schedule never needed to consider.

  • Leisure-battery condition and charging performance.
  • Solar panel/roof-cable condition.
  • 12V fuses and accessible connections.
  • Shore-power lead, inlet and RCD/MCB equipment.
  • Gas-system servicing/checks where fitted.
  • Water system, pump and tanks.
  • Pop-top seals, fabric, hinges and catches.
  • Damp/water ingress checks.
KEEP RECORDS

Build Your Own Service History

Keep invoices and record the date, mileage and work completed. For owner-maintained vans, a simple spreadsheet or service notebook is vastly better than “pretty sure I did that last summer”.
