THE ESSENTIAL TOOL KIT
FOR VOLKSWAGEN T4 OWNERS
You do not need a workshop full of equipment to own a T4, but a sensible core tool kit can make routine jobs, roadside problems and basic fault finding considerably easier.
The useful T4 tool kit is really two kits: the smaller collection worth carrying in the van, and the heavier equipment that belongs at home in the garage or workshop.
1. Start with a decent metric socket set
A compact metric socket set earns its place quickly on an older van. For smaller fasteners and general access work, a 1/4 inch drive set is convenient and takes up very little space.
Draper Expert 26 Piece 1/4" Drive Metric Socket Set
A compact metric set with standard and deep sockets, wobble extensions, universal joint and a 72 tooth ratchet.
Draper 44 Piece 1/4" Hex Socket & Bit Set
A larger small-drive kit that adds hex sockets and socket bits for work beyond ordinary nuts and bolts.
2. Add a 1/2 inch breaker bar
A breaker bar gives useful leverage for stubborn larger fasteners and wheel related jobs. It is one of those tools that feels unnecessary right up until a shorter ratchet becomes thoroughly unamusing.
Tooled Up example: Sealey 1/2" Drive Breaker Bar
Keep the correct sockets with it and avoid using your torque wrench as a substitute breaker bar.

Tight is not a measurement. Where a fastener has a specified torque, use the correct specification for the vehicle and the job rather than guessing.
A sensible workshop addition
Tooled Up carries a broad range of 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch torque wrenches. Choose the drive size and torque range around the work you actually expect to do.
BROWSE TORQUE WRENCHES4. A multimeter belongs in a T4 tool kit
Electrical faults are much easier to approach when you can measure rather than guess. Even a basic digital multimeter can help with battery voltage, continuity checks and straightforward electrical fault finding.
Draper DMM300 Automotive Digital Multimeter
An automotive-focused meter that is a natural fit for vehicle fault finding.
Digital Multimeters
Tooled Up also carries a wider range from simple meters to automotive and clamp meter options.
5. Good lighting is a tool, not a luxury
Engine bays, wheel arches and the underside of a van hide exactly what you are trying to inspect. A rechargeable inspection light is far more useful than attempting repairs while holding a phone torch between your teeth.
Rechargeable inspection lights
Magnetic bases, folding bodies and slim lights can all be useful around a T4.
BROWSE INSPECTION LIGHTS6. Lifting equipment belongs in the workshop kit
A suitable trolley jack and correctly rated axle stands are workshop equipment rather than casual accessories. Check the vehicle weight, lifting points, working load limits and the instructions for the equipment you use.
Trolley Jacks
Tooled Up lists trolley jacks across multiple capacities including heavier workshop options.
Axle Stands
The current range includes heavier options from brands including Draper and Sealey. Capacity still needs to be chosen for the actual vehicle and lifting arrangement.
What should actually live in the van?
Carrying every workshop tool defeats the point. A sensible travel kit is compact and aimed at basic checks, minor fixes and straightforward roadside problems.
